STEM and Coding for a Toddler? A Dad’s Endeavor

Hey! I’m Chris, a father to an incredible almost 3-year-old named Avery. As a product manager in tech, I spend a lot of my time thinking about applying technology and how the way we engage with our world will likely transform tremendously over the next 10 years. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how to introduce my daughter to STEM and computer science principles without relying too much on screens.

The Challenge: Parenting in a Tech-Driven World

We live in an era of rapid innovation. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and countless other technologies are transforming our world at breakneck speed. While it’s fascinating to witness, it also brings a sense of responsibility—especially as a parent. I want to equip Avery with the tools she’ll need to navigate and thrive in this tech-driven world, should she choose to. But more importantly, I want to nurture her natural curiosity and creativity.

The Importance of Curiosity and Creativity

Curiosity and creativity are powerful driving forces, and I believe they should form the bedrock of her STEM education. Our household overflows with creativity—my wife is an amazing abstract artist (lizziesellestudio.com), and our home is filled with her vibrant work. Art and creativity play a crucial role in how we think and approach challenges. So, while this blog will focus on introducing Avery to coding basics, expect plenty of overlap with creativity and art.

What to Expect from This Blog

This blog is my way of documenting our adventures as I help Avery build a foundation in problem-solving, systems thinking, and creativity—all without screens. I’ll be reviewing toys, sharing tactics, and reflecting on what’s worked (and what hasn’t) as we explore these concepts together.

Join Me on This Journey

If you’re a parent like me, striving to balance tech and creativity for your kids, or just looking for new ways to introduce them to the world of coding, I hope you’ll stick around. I’m excited to share this journey with you.
